Reset Your Week
Healthy Monday gives people an easy way to start their week with a fresh and healthy mindset through a weekly “reset” practice. The reset practice can be done on its own or in combination with other tips distributed through the weekly Healthy Monday newsletter. Healthy Monday also offers worksites, schools, and other organizations opportunities to incorporate Monday insights and programs into their own wellness efforts.

Syracuse Shines as Healthy Monday Community & Campus
Healthy Monday is the cornerstone of public health promotion at Syracuse University and throughout the local community, where a team of public health experts is utilizing marketing best practices and the latest technology to help people stay healthy.
Students at Syracuse can start the week with a wide range of nutrition and fitness activities, including Meatless Monday in the school’s cafeteria, free fruit deliveries, Move It Monday classes, wellness seminars and campus health surveys. For the local community, there are Meatless Monday meals at neighborhood restaurants and at St. Joseph’s Hospital, as well as various nutrition programs and public health forums.
Even Syracuse mayor Stephanie Miner has joined in supporting Healthy Monday: in September 2012, Mayor Miner issued a Move It Monday proclamation in celebration of the new Monday Mile markers posted around town. Students and citizens alike can stay connected to all local activities through the Healthy Syracuse website, a weekly newsletter, Facebook, Twitter or by checking in on Foursquare. This extensive program is thanks to the work of The Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion, which was established in October 2011 by Monday Campaigns founder Sid Lerner. “Sid is a social marketing pioneer,” Center Director Tom Dennison told Syracuse University Magazine. “He was really ahead of the curve with Meatless Monday, marrying the power of cyclical messaging to the reduction of chronic, preventable disease and using a social, networked, grassroots approach to pushing the idea out into the community. His timing and execution were just right, and I think that’s why we are really seeing this explode.”
The center has already made great strides in educating both the community and future health professionals, with plans to do even more in the coming years. The Lerner Center is now working with both SUNY Upstate Medical University and Say Yes to Education to establish additional Monday Campaigns and related events.

Covington Creates a Comprehensive Community Program
Covington, Kentucky, is a close-knit community that uses Monday to promote a variety of health and wellness issues. Its initiatives bring together government services, community leaders and nearby Northern Kentucky University to build a truly comprehensive wellness program.
All community efforts are overseen by the Northern Kentucky Healthy Monday Coalition, a group created to enhance healthy living opportunities through Monday programs and messaging. Each week, citizens can enjoy Meatless Monday dishes at area restaurants, Monday Mile walks and Monday Motivator tips.
In September 2009, Covington County’s 8 K-12 schools started Meatless Monday in their cafeterias. The county’s K-12 schoolchildren also receive a Healthy Monday tip every week during morning announcements, and a reminder to walk the Monday Mile routes which have been mapped out for each school.
There are many Healthy Monday activities at Northern Kentucky University. Students enjoy Meatless Monday meals, take advantage of campus walking maps, create and share Monday Matters videos and connect about wellness issues on social media. Healthy Monday meals and activities on campus are available to both students and staff, ensuring that everyone stays on the path to wellness. The students at NKU also reach out to the community through programs like Let’s Talk Monday, a forum where citizens are invited onto campus for a community discussion about obesity prevention. The Northern Kentucky Healthy Monday Coalition, combined with the efforts of Northern Kentucky University, is a wonderful example of how communities can unite to start the week with a focus on health.
