The Monday Mile (created by Move It Monday!) is a commitment to run or walk a mile every Monday as a form of exercise. It is a way for people of all abilities to be physically active once a week.

The New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities is collaborating with The Monday Campaigns to make it easier for people with disabilities to participate in healthy, physical activities every Monday. The kickoff of this initiative was a Monday Mile held on August 19th, from 10:00am – 12:00pm at Thomas Jefferson Park and Recreational Center in Manhattan.

This event is intended to inspire organizations to start their own Monday Mile and to provide a space for people with disabilities to learn about various ways they can stay active in NYC.

Groups that are centered around promoting health and wellness for people with disabilities have been invited. Participating organizations include: NYC Parks, the NYU’s Initiative for Women with Disabilities, The Lighthouse Guild, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and Adaptive Climbing.

Slated to speak are: Victor Calise, Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and Ron Hernandez, Managing Director of the Monday Campaigns.

The Monday Campaigns will also be releasing a companion collection of Healthy Monday materials to encourage people with disabilities to commit to a Healthy Monday program.
