Sid Lerner, Founder (1930-2021)

Throughout his legendary career in advertising, Sid created campaigns that changed the way the nation thought about everything, from common household items — “Don’t Squeeze the Charmin!” — to public health, and the environment.

Sid launched Meatless Monday in 2003 in association with the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, then followed with other campaigns addressing smoking cessation, nutrition, physical activity and stress management, all using a weekly cue and Monday “fresh start” mindset to motivate healthy behaviors from week-to-week.

Sid saw the importance of bringing marketing best practices to public health and started Lerner Centers for Public Health Promotion at Syracuse, Columbia and Johns Hopkins Universities and later at NYU Langone Health and Columbia University Irving Medical Center. In 2019, Johns Hopkins recognized Sid’s contribution to public health, awarding him the Doctor of Humane Letters degree, their highest honor recognizing humanitarian impact.

Sid also received the George Arents award from his alma mater, Syracuse University. Learn more about Sid’s fascinating background in this video created for the Arents award.
