Take Your Workout Outside This Monday

When the weather is nice, take advantage of it! This Monday, take your workout outside. Schedule some fun outdoor fitness like, walk a Monday Mile, go for a hike, or try something new. Even better, bring a friend!

“In every walk with nature, one receives more than he seeks.” ~ John Muir

Stronger in Numbers

Research shows we’re mentally stronger in numbers. “Group walks in nature were associated with significantly lower depression, perceived stress, and negative affect, as well as enhanced positive affect and mental well-being,” according to a large-scale study. Call your friends, join a Meetup, or find a walking tour, it’s time to reap the benefits of walking strong together.

Make a Good Mood Last

Whether walking or exercising, the effects of being outside can reverberate and put you in a good mood for the rest of the day. If you live in an urban environment, walking in parks and open spaces has a similar effect. It’s a perfect time to plan a Monday Mile, join a walking group, call a friend and make a plan to be in nature this Monday. See how many birds you can identify!

Get Energized

If you’re feeling sluggish, exercise can reinvigorate you. Being outside can enhance the effect. According to the New York Times, “In virtually all of the studies, the volunteers reported enjoying the outside activity more and, on subsequent psychological tests, scored significantly higher on measures of vitality, enthusiasm, pleasure, and self-esteem and lower on tension, depression and fatigue after they walked outside.” So instead of reaching for a cup of coffee to get going this Monday, put on a jacket, open the door, and step outside!

Vitamin Sunshine

When the weather’s nice, soak up your daily dosage of Vitamin D outside! When the sun shines on us it activates our bodies to produce Vitamin D, which strengthens our bones and guards against osteoporosis. Wear a short-sleeved shirt and soak up the rays while you’re making some tracks, but don’t forget to put on sunscreen if you’re out for longer than 20 minutes.

Celebrate the start of a new week by using Monday to enjoy nature, to feel connected to your friends, family, and community, and get stronger together.
