There’s no doubt, quitting smoking is hard, particularly in a social setting. Make this Monday about being prepared to face your social triggers to make it easier.

Now that you’re a non-smoker, it’s time to think of ways around smoking so you can stay quit.

Distract yourself from being triggered. Consider spending more time in places where smoking is not allowed. Many public places do not allow smoking such as parks, libraries, malls, museums, theaters, and restaurants. If you find yourself in a place where you used to smoke, be prepared. Carry distractions like straws, healthy snacks, bottled water, gum, or sugar-free candies.

Find the right people to spend time with, whether it’s family, friends, or a quit buddy. Reach out and make plans for social outings to help you feel supported and encouraged.

Make it a regular habit to take deep breaths whenever a social trigger feels like it could be around the corner. It could make all the difference. Inhale slowly, to the count of six, exhale slowly to the count of six. Feel all that clean, fresh air replace your urge to smoke.
