Around the Globe with Meatless Monday: Israel

Did you know that Meatless Monday is active in over 40 countries and continues to grow? We are a global movement with a simple message: one day a week, cut the meat. Global citizens are pioneering the way, making meatless dishes part of their everyday culture. This month, we want to introduce you to a few them.

Our first stop, Israel.MM Israel

Miki Haimovich, the founder of Meatless Monday Israel, was a newscaster for 18 years in Israel, sharing the ups and downs of her homeland with the world. When she retired, she felt strongly about doing good in the world. Practically a life-long vegetarian, she heard about Sid Lerner and the Meatless Monday campaign, and wanted to get involved.

After Miki launched Meatless Monday Israel, she revolutionized the way Israelis incorporate Meatless Monday into their lives. She hosted the first plant-based culinary conference in Israel for over 150 corporate foodservice chefs. She was also interviewed on i24 news network about her Meatless Monday activities – it’s in English!

Recently, Meatless Monday Israel introduced the campaign to the Arab community, making connections with leading Arab thought leaders, dietitians, and medical professionals. Finally, as the first university in Israel to implement Meatless Monday practices, 30,000 students at Tel Aviv University can now go meatless on Mondays.

We reached out to Meatless Monday Israel and asked them to share a popular Israeli meatless dish with us. Shawarma Tofu is from the recently published cookbook, Cooking Meatless Monday, filled with some of Miki’s favorite meatless recipes, including children’s meals, appetizers, and Passover dishes.
